This is the only route that starts on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border. This route has low traffic and is often used by people who are looking for a more remote wilderness route. The scenery is not as varied as other routes on the western slope, but the low traffic on this route and the wilderness experience for most of the ascent will make up for it. It will join the Marangu route on the last day, and then you descend using the Marangu route.
If travelling in the rainy season, this route is recommended because the north side of the mountain receives less precipitation, allowing for drier conditions than other routes during the rainy season.
This can be done in 6 days, but we will always recommend the 7-day option for better acclimatization.
6 days on mountain (total 8)
A Mahiri African Tours representative will pick you up and greet you at the Kilimanjaro Airport on arrival. You will be transferred to your accommodations for the night in Moshi, where you will have a briefing about the trek and a review of your equipment and trekking gear.
Today we start the drive from Moshi to Nalemoru Gat, which takes about 4 hours. At the gate, your guide will finalize all necessary paperwork before the trek begins. As your guide completes registration you will have lunch before starting the trek. Today's trek will begin with hiking through fields of maize before reaching the forest. Once in the lush dense rainforest, there is a good chance of seeing black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bush babies. We finish the trek for the night at Simba Camp, where a warm dinner will be made.
Elevation: approx 2,000m- 2,600m Hiking time: 8 kms
Hiking distance: 3-4kms
Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Caves
Today the trek will continue towards Kikelewa caves, with a steady incline. We will stop at the second cave for a warm lunch, and then continue trekking through the moorland and heather zones. Here if weather permits the views of Kibo Peak can be breathtaking. Will finish the day at Kikelewa caves and have the remaining part of the day to relax. This campsite is in a sheltered valley.
Elevation: approx 2,600m - 3,600m Hiking time: 6-7 hrs
Hiking distance: 10km
Today during the trek you will notice the landscape change as we gain higher elevations. The vegetation will diminish and become more desert. We will arrive at Mawenzi Hut for a warm lunch and a rest. After lunch, there is a small acclimatization hike towards Mawenzi volcano, which we highly recommend participation in not just for some spectacular views but will help significantly in your body's ability to adjust and acclimatize to the altitude changes.
After the hike towards the Mawenzi volcano, we will return to Mawenzi tarn for dinner and the night.
Elevation: approx 3,600m - 4,300m Hiking time: 3-4 hrs
Hiking distance: 6kms
Today you will walk through the area known as the saddle, it stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This landscape is dry and barren, often described as a "lunar-like landscape". Once at Kibo Hut you will rest and prepare for tomorrow. Shortly after dinner, you will sleep, as tonight at midnight you will start your midnight climb towards the summit.
Elevation: approx 4,300m - 4,700m Hiking time: 6-7 hrs hrs
Hiking distance: 9 km
Today is your summit night, with a very early start to the day. The trek will start at about midnight as you walk towards the summit, making this your most difficult day on the mountain, Between the significant elevation gain to the summit and the significant descent after the summit. Although this route is considered to be the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it is still extremely difficult, don't underestimate the trek.
The high altitude makes this a very challenging summit night. This will be your most difficult day, but your guides will be there to assist you along the way. The lack of oxygen the closer you get will be challenging to deal with and you will need to focus on your breathing. When walking along the crater rim towards Uhuru peak you will be able to see the glaciers that cover Kibo up close. After reaching the summit, the amount of time spent here will depend on the weather and your health status at the current time.
You will then descend back down to Kibo Hut for lunch and a rest. After this, you will pack up your belongings and then continue your descent down to Horombo Hut. This hut is the final stop of the day, where you will then relax for the night and have a delicious dinner as you will be exhausted from the long day.
It is important that while you descend from the summit to go slowly and make sure you are watching your footing as you will get tired. The descent is commonplace for injuries to occur from falling and losing your footing if moving too fast.
Elevation: approx. 4,700m - 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) - 3,720m Hiking time: 11-12 hrs
Hiking distance: 16 kms
Today is your last day on the mountain. After breakfast, you will descend to Marangu gate. The same gate you started the trek on. You will walk through the beautiful forest before arriving at the gate. At the gate, if you were successful in submitting to Uhuru Peak you will receive your summit certificate. Your driver will be waiting for you here and will drive you back to your accommodations for the night.
Elevation: approx. 3,720m- 1800m Hiking time: 5-6 hrs
Hiking distance: 19 km
Today we will have a driver take you to the airport for your departure flight. If you choose to continue on another tour after your climb we will take care of that for you to ensure it will be a seamless transition to your next tour.
