Kilemakyaro – the original Chagga name for this legendary mountain – means “hard to conquer.” Over time, the name proved difficult for foreigners to pronounce and gradually evolved into Kilimanjaro.Standing at 5,896 metres, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Its permanently snow-capped peak rises dramatically from the equator, just 290 km from the tropical Indian Ocean coastline — defying the usual rule that snow only exists at much higher latitudes. The mountain was formed nearly one million years ago through a series of volcanic eruptions and is still considered geologically active. Minor activity was last recorded as recently as the 1940s.The base of this immense volcanic massif stretches about 40 miles (65 km) in diameter. Kilimanjaro National Park is home to elephants, leopards, lions, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The lush rainforests encircling the mountain provide vital fertility to the lower slopes, where the Chagga people cultivate coffee, maize, and bananas in their traditional shamba farms. While simply gazing at the snow-covered Uhuru Peak on a clear day is spectacular, the ultimate experience is climbing to the summit itself.

The Climb

The classic Marangu Route (also known as the “Coca-Cola Route”) takes you through lush tropical rainforest, open moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the snow-capped summits of Kibo, Uhuru Peak, and Mawenzi. The trek covers roughly 18 miles (29 km) and normally takes 5 to 6 days. Fit and well-acclimatised climbers can sometimes complete it in 4 days.Local Chagga people have been ascending the mountain for centuries in search of medicinal plants and to perform traditional rituals. The first Europeans reached the summit in 1889 with the help of local guides and porters.

Important Notes

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a serious physical challenge with real risks, particularly related to altitude. However, if you are reasonably fit and properly prepared, it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. The mountain has been conquered by climbers as young as 11 years old (in 1976) and as old as 88 years old (in 1988).At the end of your trek, celebrate with the crew over local beer and grilled bananas — and proudly collect your official summit certificate!

Best Time to Climb

The most favourable months are:
January, February, July, August, November, and December.April and May are the most challenging due to heavy cloud cover, frequent rain, and snow, which can reduce visibility and make the climb significantly harder. We offer a wide range of well-designed packages that combine Kilimanjaro treks with memorable Northern Circuit safaris and relaxing Zanzibar beach holidays.Would you like me to rephrase or expand any specific section?
