Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, the mighty Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru remains one of the best-kept secrets of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. Yet for anyone visiting Arusha, the dramatic, jagged silhouette of this impressive volcano rising from densely forested slopes is impossible to ignore — and hard to resist.Mount Meru is a dormant volcano that once stood much taller. Millions of years ago, a massive explosion blew off its summit and entire eastern flank, leaving behind a vast, asymmetrical caldera that now forms the mountain’s main structure. Inside this caldera rises a younger ash cone — a striking reminder of more recent volcanic activity. Steam vents and hot springs still bubble on its slopes, showing that fires deep below are not entirely extinct. The most recent recorded eruption was a lava flow in 1879. At 4,566 metres, the summit of Mount Meru is a prominent rocky knob offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views in East Africa. On a clear day you can see:

  • Arusha town directly to the south

  • The vast Maasai Steppe to the southwest

  • The Shira Plateau and the snowy dome of Kibo (Kilimanjaro) to the east

  • The dramatic Natron Badlands to the northwest

The Climb
The route up Mount Meru is not technically difficult, but the altitude can still affect climbers. The trek usually takes 3 to 4 days, with overnight stays in simple but comfortable mountain huts.In return for your effort, Mount Meru rewards you with beautiful scenery, varied wildlife, rich flora, and fascinating geology. The dramatic changes in vegetation zones — from lush rainforest to alpine desert — refresh both body and spirit. Many climbers also use Meru as an excellent warm-up and acclimatisation trek before attempting Kilimanjaro. Whether you’re looking for a challenging weekend adventure from Arusha, a perfect training climb before Kilimanjaro, or a wonderful addition to your Northern Circuit safari, Mount Meru offers a memorable and rewarding experience.
