7 Days Machame Route

7 Days Machame Route

$1700 / per person
(0 Reviews)

The seven-day Machame route is one of the most walked paths on Kilimanjaro, and the extra night makes a real difference. You climb through rainforest, cross the Shira Plateau, and use a high pass at Lava Tower before sleeping lower at Barranco. From there the route joins the southern circuit over the Barranco Wall, with a night at Karanga before the summit push from Barafu. The pace is steady, the scenery changes every day, and the “climb high, sleep low” day is built in.

Tour Plan

1

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800 m) – Machame Camp (2,835 m)

After an early breakfast and the drive from Arusha or Moshi, you register at Machame Gate and start through dense montane rainforest. The trail is often muddy and can be steep in places, with colobus monkeys sometimes visible in the canopy. Walking time is about 5–7 hours. You overnight at Machame Camp on the edge of the forest. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
2

Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835 m) – Shira Camp (3,750 m)

You leave the forest behind and climb onto the moorland of the Shira Plateau. Giant heather and lobelia take over as the views open toward Kibo if the weather is clear. The day is shorter than the first, about 4–6 hours, and ends at Shira Camp. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
3

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,750 m) – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

This is the main acclimatisation day. You cross the plateau and climb to Lava Tower for lunch, gaining a good deal of altitude, then descend into the Barranco Valley. Giant groundsels and lobelias line the valley floor. The long day, about 6–8 hours, lets you test how you feel higher up while sleeping lower than the high point. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
4

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960 m) – Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

The morning begins with the Barranco Wall, the steepest section of the route. It is a scramble in places and you may use your hands for balance, but there is no technical climbing. From the top you follow the ridge toward Kibo, with views of the southern glaciers when the sky is clear, then drop into the Karanga Valley. Walking time is about 4–5 hours. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
5

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035 m) – Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

A shorter day, about 3–5 hours, crosses alpine desert to Barafu Camp on the southeast ridge. You arrive in the afternoon, eat an early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit start. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
6

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

You wake around midnight for tea and biscuits, then climb slowly in the dark toward Stella Point on the crater rim, about 5–7 hours. After a short rest, another 1–2 hours brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, usually around sunrise. You descend to Barafu for a rest and a meal, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the upper forest, about 3–4 hours further. It is a very long day. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
7

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,080 m) – Mweka Gate (1,640 m)

After a short farewell from the guides, a 3–4 hour walk through the rainforest brings you to Mweka Gate. You sign out, collect your summit certificate, and meet your driver for the transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Breakfast, Lunch
