6 Days Marangu Route

(0 Reviews)
The six-day Marangu route is the only path on Kilimanjaro that uses huts rather than tents. It climbs the mountain’s southeastern side, with an extra night at Horombo so you can walk higher and sleep lower before the push to Kibo. The trail is more gradual than the western routes, and you descend the same way you came up.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) – Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
After registration at Marangu Gate you walk through montane rainforest for about 4–5 hours. The path is well maintained and often muddy. Mandara Hut sits in a clearing near the upper edge of the forest; a short side trip to Maundi Crater is possible if you arrive with energy to spare.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
The forest gives way to moorland of giant heather and lobelia. On a clear day both Kibo and Mawenzi come into view. The walk takes about 5–7 hours and ends at Horombo Hut, the largest camp on the route, set on an open saddle.

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Zebra Rocks (about 4,000 m) – Horombo Hut
This is the acclimatisation day. You hike toward the base of Mawenzi, often as far as Zebra Rocks, then return to Horombo to sleep at the same altitude as the night before. The walk is about 2–4 hours and gives you a clearer sense of how you are adapting before the higher camps.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Kibo Hut (4,703 m)
The trail crosses alpine desert, the last water point on the way up, and the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Walking time is about 5–7 hours. Kibo Hut is a simple stone building at the foot of the summit slopes. You eat early and rest for the midnight start.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
You leave around midnight for the steep scree climb to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, usually 5–7 hours, then continue another 1–2 hours along the rim to Uhuru Peak. Sunrise from the highest point in Africa is the high point of the trek. After photos you descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut, a long day of roughly 12–15 hours in total.
